During the classical period, one of the most amazing cultures in the history of humanity flourished in the tropical forests of Mesoamerica: the Mayan culture.
The society of the Mayan culture presents peculiar features that make it different from the other Mesoamerican societies. These distinctive elements are: the use of hieroglyphic writing composed of more than 700 signs; the use of the false vault in architecture; the development of a monumental sculpture of religious character that associates the stela and the altar; and, a system to measure the time that starts from a specific date.
Thus defined, the Mayan culture sub-area comprises the territory of the current Mexican States of Yucatan, Campeche and Quintana Roo, part of those of Tabasco and Chiapas, the Guatemalan Departments of Petén and Izabal, northwest Honduras, and Belize.
