Aztec (Mexica) Culture

The Aztecs, also called Mexicas, appeared in the valley of Mexico towards the second half of the 12th century.

Due to their extraordinary military organization they dominated in a short time all other populations of the country and established an empire that extended from the southern limit of present-day Michoacán to beyond the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

Towards the 1325 the Aztecs founded a great city, Tenochtitlán, erected on a lake, that they turned into capital of the empire (present city of Mexico). The Aztecs were part of Mesoamerican cultures, their dialect was Nahuatl.
